My wide white bed by Trish Harris

BLURB

Trish Harris's first collection of poetry navigates the currents of the hospital from the moorings of a wide white bed. On this poignant journey through the swells and up draughts of recovery, hope and humour are never far away.

My wide white bed is Trish Harris's poetic memoir of a prolonged stay in hospital. But in many ways it is a medicine itself. It shows how crucial imagination is to being well. And how it is less often sparked by angels than bedpans, and by noticing, and by thinking to hold the stare of whatever is looking back at us. — Glenn Colquhoun, GP and poet.

With a sharp eye and an ear alert to language and tone, Trish Harris gives us this sequence of brave, often funny poems. We sense the fear underlying the casual comment, rejoice in the kindness of staff and wish the tea lady could get a break. These are poems rich in detail and atmosphere. — Jenny Bornholdt, poet.

In a few words Trish Harris gives us small visions of hospital life – through the patient's lens. Roommates make connections and encourage each other as their bodies and bones heal. These poems are a delight to read and will appeal to patients, staff and beyond. — Anne Taylor, Orthopaedic Clinical Nurse Manager, Hutt Hospital

process

As project manager, I was in charge of handling the team as a whole, making sure we met deadlines while being the liaison between the publisher, author, our tutors, designer and printer.

As part of the marketing and sales team, I handled the marketing collateral, making the promotional videos and various posters for conferences and competitions. I also organised talks for the author, most notably being 'Shonky joints, adaptation and writing from the inside', a thought-provoking patient's perspective about her arthritis and writing experiences with excerpts from her books The Walking Stick Tree and My wide white bed at Massey University's School of Nursing, while concentrating on making a media list for reviews, interviews and other opportunities. We took care of sending media packs out while updating Landing Press's social media, and also helped organise the launch.

Marketing Collateral

For the 2017 National Day Poetry, we organised two competitions: Sea of Words, aimed at promoting the press and What's in that pocket? aimed at promoting the book.

For Sea of Words, I first came up with the concept of origami boats because origami is fun, and there was a boat on our cover! After practicing our origami and several different styles of boats, Margot and I decided on this sailboat, and we set about finding a sponsor for a giant piece of paper (because I enjoy going all out!). Wakefields Digital very kindly gave us two pieces of their biggest sheet of paper (an A0), and we made our first giant origami boat. We spray-painted our first attempt bright orange, but decided to go with its natural white state for the day itself.

Ever wondered what's in a nurse's pocket? There's a poem in My wide white bed (Landing Press) where author Trish Harris makes her own fantastical list of items in a nurse’s pocket. Now we want to know what you think! Send in a list of four items and be in the draw to win two vouchers for dinner and a movie, and copies of the book. The competition begins on National Poetry Day, and is open for two weeks. Winners will be contacted, and announced on our Landing Press website and Facebook page. Be sure to subscribe/follow us. A list of all items submitted will be posted on these sites as well.

media attention

The day itself was super fun; we received 235 entries! Our little event was also featured on Radio NZ.

For What's in that pocket?, Margot came up with the idea of featuring one of our favourite poems while we were brainstorming and we absolutely loved it! I then came up with several concepts of the poster, before settling on and refining the chosen poster below.

Your words. Our poets. Come into the National Library and drop a word relating to the sea (plus your name and contact details) into our giant origami boat on display. Get an instant prize of an individually-wrapped biscuit and a poem from one of two new collections of poetry, Keel & Drift by Adrienne Jansen and Everything is here by Rob Hack. Go in the draw to win dinner for two and a cruise on a boat in Mana, or copies of these great collections. At the end of the day our poets will use all your words to create an entirely new poem that will be posted on Facebook, and the Landing Press and Escalator Press websites.

the digital promotions

I then went ahead and created some videos promoting our competition! This idea came from our author herself, and I was in charge of making it come to life. There were some tricky shots to edit, but I do hope I did it justice.

Initially these videos ended with our nurse pulling out the poster above, but after the competition ended, I edited it to feature just the book. We even included a small 'behind-the-scenes'. Feel free to check them all out!
